When querying an agent...?

I'm still researching the publication process and several sites have mentioned different things. For example, one site suggested sending a one-page synopsis of my story, while several others didn't mention it. Should I send a one-page synopsis to an agent, or does it depend on their personal preference. Also: should I send my query to more than one agent at once?
